Quick and easy breakfast and dinner recipe – This Onion Tomato chutney. All you need is just 10-15 minutes to make this easy chantey. Taste great with idli and dosai. Your breakfast / dinner ideas sorted. This is an adapted recipe from my mom. Mom’s version included a small piece of coconut, I did not have coconut so skipped it, and added garlic cloves, Channa Dal. I was surprised, it taste great. This has become Vin’s new Red chutney 🙂

Things to note

  • I have added 4-5 dry red chilis, adjust according to your taste.
  • Sauce the onions until it turns soft and slightly brown color.
  • Use ripe tomatoes for great flavor and taste. Saute until the tomatoes are mushy. This way there won’t be any raw smell of onion, tomato and garlic.

Firstly, bring a wide-bottomed pan over medium heat and add 2-3 tbsp of oil.
To this add 1 tbsp of channa dal, 1 tsp cumin seeds and roast for 2-3 minutes.Add 4-5 dry red chili, adjust the dry red chili according to your taste.  Continue to roast for 2 minutes in medium heat.

Furthermore, add 1 onion (medium-sized) roughly chopped, 3-4 garlic cloves, a small piece of tamarind and saute for 3-4 minutes until the onions turn a soft and slightly golden brown color. Add salt.

Along with this, add 2 medium-sized (ripe) tomatoes and continue to saute for 4-5 minutes, until the tomatoes turn soft and mushy.

Switch off the flame, and transfer this mixture to a plate or bowl and cool completely.
Transfer this mixture to a blender and add little water and blend into a smooth paste.  Transfer into a bowl. Keep Aside.
Bring a small pan (or use the same pan you used to make the chutney) over medium heat and add 1 tbsp oil.
Lastly, add 1 tsp of mustard seeds, 1/2 tsp urid dal, a pinch of hing and few curry leaves.
Let it sputter.

Finally, add this to the chutney and mix well.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 tsp Urid dal
  • pinch of Hing
  • few Curry leaves
